Add Watermark
Add a text watermark to every page of a PDF.
or drag and drop · max 50 MB
Add Watermark lets you stamp a text watermark onto every page of a PDF document directly in your browser. Watermarks serve several practical purposes: marking a document as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT to prevent misuse of preliminary versions, protecting proprietary content with a copyright notice, personalising a distributed document with a recipient name to track leaks, or branding a PDF with a company name before sharing. iSavePDF's watermark tool uses pdf-lib to write the watermark directly onto each page of the PDF — your file is never uploaded to a server. You control the watermark text, opacity, rotation angle, font size, and colour. The tool is free with no account required and adds no secondary watermark of its own to the output.
Step by step
How to add watermark on iSavePDF
Open Add Watermark on iSavePDF
Visit isavepdf.com/watermark-pdf in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, or Brave on desktop or mobile. No installation, extension, or account is required.
Upload your PDF
Drag your PDF onto the upload zone or click to browse your device. The tool accepts a single PDF of up to 50 MB. Once uploaded, a preview of the first page appears so you can see how the watermark will be positioned.
Set your watermark text
Type the watermark text you want to appear on every page. Common choices include CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, DO NOT DISTRIBUTE, a company name, a copyright notice, or a recipient name for personalised distribution. The text is rendered diagonally across the page by default.
Adjust opacity, size, and rotation
Control how prominent the watermark is using the opacity slider — a light watermark at 15–25% opacity is clearly visible without obscuring the content, while a heavier watermark at 50%+ is harder to miss or remove. Adjust the font size and rotation angle to suit the document. The preview updates in real time so you can see exactly how the finished PDF will look before converting.
Apply and download
Click Apply Watermark. pdf-lib writes the text onto every page of the PDF in your browser's memory and saves the result to your downloads folder. No file is transmitted to any server at any point in this process.

When to use it
Common use cases
Marking preliminary documents as DRAFT
Contracts, proposals, reports, and presentations circulated for review are frequently confused with final versions by recipients who save and later share them without the review context. Watermarking a working draft with DRAFT or REVIEW COPY before sharing makes it unambiguous that the document is not the final version and should not be distributed further. The watermark survives if the PDF is printed, screenshotted, or re-saved.
Protecting confidential documents
Documents containing non-public business information, financial data, legal advice, HR matters, or technical specifications often need to be shared with specific people who need the information but should not forward it further. A CONFIDENTIAL watermark signals the intended handling, creates a record of the classification, and adds a visible deterrent to casual forwarding. For highly sensitive documents, personalising the watermark with the recipient's name or email address also creates a record of who each copy was sent to.
Adding copyright notices to distributed PDFs
Authors, photographers, designers, and businesses that distribute PDF content — ebooks, design templates, training materials, whitepapers — use watermarks to assert copyright ownership. A visible copyright watermark on every page makes the ownership clear even if the file is separated from its original context, forwarded without attribution, or uploaded to a sharing platform.
Branding PDFs before client distribution
Consultants, agencies, and service businesses that send reports and deliverables to clients often watermark those documents with their company name or logo text before sending. This ensures the firm's branding is visible throughout the document even when the PDF is shared within the client's organisation, and reinforces the authorship of the analysis or design work.
Why iSavePDF
The privacy-first way to add watermark
PDF watermarking tools that run online require you to upload your document to a remote server. For documents being watermarked as CONFIDENTIAL — which is precisely the kind of content that should not be uploaded to third-party services — this is a contradiction. A GDPR-protected legal brief, a proprietary technical design, a financial model marked DRAFT: these are exactly the documents people watermark, and exactly the documents that should not travel to unknown servers for processing.
iSavePDF writes watermarks directly onto your PDF pages using pdf-lib, running entirely in your browser. The document never leaves your device. pdf-lib places the watermark as a new content layer on each page, writing it as vector text at a specified opacity, rotation, and font size. The modification happens in your browser's memory and the result is saved to your downloads folder. No server receives your file. The tool is free and funded by display advertising — the business model requires no access to your document content.
Tips & limits
Tips for the best results
15–25% opacity is the standard range for readable watermarks
A watermark too faint (under 10%) may not be visible when the document is printed or viewed on a low-contrast screen. A watermark too heavy (over 50%) can make the content difficult to read. The 15–25% range creates a clearly visible watermark that doesn't obscure the document content underneath. Adjust based on how dark or light the pages of your specific document are.
Diagonal placement covers more of the page
A diagonal watermark (typically 45° or -45°) is harder to crop out than a horizontal one, as it extends across the full page area. For documents where removal is a concern, a diagonal large-text watermark at moderate opacity is the standard approach.
Watermarks can be removed by skilled users
A PDF watermark applied by overlaying text on pages is a deterrent, not a security control. A user with PDF editing tools can remove an overlay watermark. If you need a genuinely tamper-resistant marking, combine the watermark with PDF password protection. For legal admissibility or forensic traceability, watermarking alone is not sufficient.
Combine with other iSavePDF tools
If you need to compress the watermarked PDF for emailing, use Compress PDF after watermarking. If you're watermarking a document before splitting it into sections for distribution, use Split PDF after watermarking to produce the individual section PDFs.
