Chat with PDF

Ask questions about any PDF and get instant AI answers.

This is an AI tool — the exception to our usual privacy promise. Your PDF file stays in your browser, but the extracted text is sent to our AI provider to generate the answer. It is not stored. For fully browser-only tools, see our other 40 tools.

Chat with PDF lets you ask questions about a PDF document and get answers drawn directly from its content — finding specific information, summarising sections, clarifying terminology, and extracting facts without reading the entire document. The tool is useful whenever you need to quickly interrogate a document rather than read it linearly: a 200-page tender document where you need specific clauses, a legal contract where you want to find the termination conditions, a research paper where you need the methodology section, or a manual where you're looking for one specific procedure. iSavePDF extracts the text from your PDF using pdfjs-dist and sends your question to a language model API that answers based only on the document content. Your PDF itself is never uploaded to any cloud storage — only the extracted text is sent, over an encrypted connection, to generate your answer. The tool is free with no account required.

Step by step

How to chat with pdf on iSavePDF

  1. Open Chat with PDF on iSavePDF

Navigate to isavepdf.com/chat-with-pdf in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, or Brave on desktop or mobile. No installation, extension, or account is required.

  2. Upload your PDF

Drag your PDF onto the upload zone or click to browse. The tool accepts a single PDF of up to 50 MB. Once the PDF loads, the text is extracted from each page using pdfjs-dist — this happens locally in your browser. A status indicator shows when the document is ready for questions.

  3. Ask your first question

Type a question about the document in the chat input. You can ask for specific information ('What are the payment terms?'), request a summary ('Summarise the key findings'), ask for clarification ('What does the indemnity clause say?'), or look for specific numbers or dates. The AI answers based only on the content of the document you uploaded.

  4. Continue the conversation

Ask follow-up questions. The chat maintains context across the conversation so you can progressively drill into the document — ask for an overview, then ask for details on a specific section, then ask for clarification on a specific term. The AI references the document throughout.

  5. Review and use the answers

The answers cite the relevant sections of the document so you can verify them against the source. For important decisions, always verify the AI's answers by reading the cited sections yourself — the AI provides a fast navigation aid, not a replacement for your own judgement.

When to use it

Common use cases

  • Interrogating long contracts and legal documents

Contracts, lease agreements, employment agreements, and legal briefs can run to dozens or hundreds of pages. Finding specific clauses — the limitation of liability, the termination notice period, the exclusivity terms, the governing law — by reading linearly is slow. Asking directly ('What is the notice period for termination?' or 'What are the limitations on liability?') surfaces the relevant section in seconds. The AI also explains legal language in plain terms when asked, which is useful when reviewing agreements outside your area of expertise.

  • Extracting key information from research papers

Academic papers follow a standard structure, but finding the specific methodology, the sample size, the key results, or the statistical confidence intervals often requires reading the full paper to locate them. Asking the AI directly surfaces these details from wherever they appear in the document. Researchers, students, and professionals reviewing literature can process significantly more papers by interrogating them for specific information rather than reading each in full.

  • Reviewing tender documents and RFPs

Requests for Proposal and tender documents are deliberately comprehensive and often deliberately difficult to navigate. Finding the evaluation criteria, the mandatory requirements, the submission deadline, and the scoring methodology requires reading dozens of pages. Chat with PDF lets procurement teams and suppliers get to the decision-relevant information immediately — what are we being scored on, what are the mandatory conditions, what are the penalties for non-compliance?

  • Understanding technical manuals and specifications

Software documentation, hardware manuals, technical specifications, and compliance standards are dense reference documents. The information you need is in there, but finding it quickly requires knowing the structure well. Chat with PDF lets you ask in plain language — 'How do I configure SSL certificates?' or 'What is the maximum operating temperature?' — and get answers from the document without navigating hundreds of pages of reference material.

Why iSavePDF

The privacy-first way to chat with pdf

PDF document chat tools differ in how they handle your file. Some upload your PDF to a cloud storage service, process it server-side, and may retain it for model training or logging purposes. For confidential documents — contracts under NDA, internal financial reports, privileged legal advice, patient records — this level of exposure is unacceptable. iSavePDF extracts the document text locally in your browser using pdfjs-dist, and only the extracted text (not the PDF itself) is sent to the AI API for answering your questions. The transmission is encrypted, the PDF binary never leaves your device, and the extracted text is used only to answer your question and not retained.

The AI's answers are grounded in your document's content. It won't speculate or fabricate information not present in the PDF — if the answer isn't in the document, the AI says so. For long or complex documents, this grounding is what makes the tool useful for real decision-making rather than just entertainment.

Tips & limits

Tips for the best results

  • Specific questions get better answers than vague ones

Ask 'What is the renewal notice period in the contract?' rather than 'Tell me about renewals'. The more specific the question, the more precisely the AI can locate and report the relevant content. If the first answer isn't what you needed, rephrase with more context about what you're looking for.

  • The AI can only answer from the document content

The AI is grounded in your PDF. It will not answer questions from general knowledge or make up information not present in the document. If you ask about something not covered in the PDF, it will say so. This is a feature — it prevents the AI from hallucinating document content that doesn't exist.

  • Scanned PDFs may produce poor results

Chat with PDF relies on text extracted from the PDF. Scanned documents — images of pages — have no embedded text layer. If your PDF is a scan, the extracted text will be empty or minimal and the AI will have nothing to answer from. Use OCR on the scanned PDF first to add a text layer before using Chat with PDF.

  • Verify important answers against the source

The AI is a navigation aid, not a legal or professional adviser. For answers that will inform significant decisions — contract terms, compliance requirements, medical dosages, financial figures — verify the AI's response by reading the cited section yourself before acting on it.

  • Yes — free to use with no account required. A usage limit applies per session to cover the cost of the AI API — the limit is generous for typical document interrogation use.
