You've received a contract, a rental agreement, a school permission form, or an NDA — and it needs your signature. Printing it, signing by hand, scanning it back in, and emailing it is a multi-step chore that most people tolerate out of habit. There's a faster way to sign a PDF electronically — and you don't need Acrobat, DocuSign, or an account of any kind.

Why people need to sign PDFs

Electronic signatures have become the default for most document workflows. Employment contracts, service agreements, freelance proposals, lease renewals — the vast majority arrive as PDFs, and recipients are expected to return them signed. The friction comes from the tools: full-featured e-signature platforms charge monthly fees, and heavyweight desktop apps like Adobe Acrobat require a licence just to sign a single page.

For occasional signing — which describes most people — a free, browser-based tool covers 95% of use cases without the overhead.

Three ways to add your signature

Before you sign, it's worth knowing what your options are. Most signing tools, including iSavePDF, support all three:

Draw your signature

You trace your signature with a mouse or trackpad, or — much better — with a finger or stylus on a touch screen. The result looks natural and genuinely personal. This is the most common choice for contracts and legal documents.

Type your signature

You type your name and the tool renders it in a handwriting-style font. Quick and tidy, but less personal. Good for internal documents or forms where a typed name is acceptable.

Upload an image

You photograph or scan your physical signature, upload it as a PNG (transparent background preferred), and position it on the document. This produces the most authentic-looking result and is worth setting up once if you sign documents regularly.

Tip

For a clean image signature, sign on white paper with a black pen, photograph it in good light, and use a free background-removal tool to make it transparent before saving as PNG. You only have to do this once.

Is an electronic signature PDF legally valid?

For most everyday documents, yes. Two major frameworks cover this:

United States — eSign Act (2000): Electronic signatures carry the same legal weight as handwritten signatures for the vast majority of contracts and agreements. Exceptions include wills, certain real-estate transactions, and court documents — those still require wet ink in most jurisdictions.

European Union — eIDAS Regulation (2016): eIDAS establishes three tiers of electronic signature. A simple electronic signature PDF (what you create in a browser tool) is valid for general commercial contracts. Regulated industries and specific government filings may require the higher "Advanced" or "Qualified" tiers, which involve verified identity certificates.

For employment agreements, NDAs, freelance contracts, and most B2B paperwork, a simple electronic signature is legally enforceable in both jurisdictions. When in doubt, consult the document's governing law clause or ask the requesting party what they require.

Note

Electronic signatures and digital signatures are not the same thing. An electronic signature is a visual mark of consent. A digital signature is a cryptographic certificate that verifies the signer's identity and detects document tampering. Most business documents need the former, not the latter.

How to sign a PDF with iSavePDF

iSavePDF's sign tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device — not even temporarily.

  1. Open the sign PDF tool
  2. Drop your PDF onto the upload zone, or click to browse for the file
  3. The document opens in the in-browser editor — navigate to the signature field or the page where your signature is needed
  4. Choose your method: draw, type, or upload an image
  5. Drag the signature to the correct position and resize as needed
  6. Click Download — your signed PDF document is saved directly to your device

The whole process — from upload to signed PDF document — takes under two minutes.

How iSavePDF compares

| Feature | iSavePDF | Adobe Acrobat | DocuSign | Smallpdf | |---|---|---|---|---| | Price | Free | Paid (£/month) | Freemium (3 docs/month) | Freemium (2 docs/day) | | Runs in browser | Yes | Desktop app | Cloud | Cloud | | Files leave your device | Never | N/A | Yes | Yes | | Account required | No | Yes | Yes | Optional | | Draw / type / image | All three | All three | Draw / type | Draw / type | | Mobile-friendly | Yes | App required | App available | Yes |

The meaningful difference isn't price — it's architecture. DocuSign and Smallpdf send your file to their servers for processing. For most documents that's fine; for anything sensitive (financial agreements, medical authorisations, legal filings), browser-side processing is a significant privacy advantage.

A note on signing fields vs. free placement

Some PDFs arrive with pre-built signature fields — interactive form elements that show a highlighted box where your signature should go. Others are flat PDFs with no fields at all, just a line that says "Signature:".

iSavePDF handles both. For flat PDFs, you place your signature wherever you need it. For PDFs with form fields, the tool detects the fields and lets you fill them directly.
