Is an electronic signature PDF legally valid?
For most everyday documents, yes. Two major frameworks cover this:
United States — eSign Act (2000): Electronic signatures carry the same legal weight as handwritten signatures for the vast majority of contracts and agreements. Exceptions include wills, certain real-estate transactions, and court documents — those still require wet ink in most jurisdictions.
European Union — eIDAS Regulation (2016): eIDAS establishes three tiers of electronic signature. A simple electronic signature PDF (what you create in a browser tool) is valid for general commercial contracts. Regulated industries and specific government filings may require the higher "Advanced" or "Qualified" tiers, which involve verified identity certificates.
For employment agreements, NDAs, freelance contracts, and most B2B paperwork, a simple electronic signature is legally enforceable in both jurisdictions. When in doubt, consult the document's governing law clause or ask the requesting party what they require.

Electronic signatures and digital signatures are not the same thing. An electronic signature is a visual mark of consent. A digital signature is a cryptographic certificate that verifies the signer's identity and detects document tampering. Most business documents need the former, not the latter.
